As part of their redesign, the center had a new space at the front of their site they wanted to become an edible garden. Not only was the garden to be a space for growing food it was hoped it would be a learning, teaching and sharing space for children and their families. Consultation with children and parents helped determine which herbs, vegetables, fruits and salad greens should be grown and fruit trees were donated by various people in the community. We designed a foraging garden with pathways for exploration instead of rectangular raised beds. Importance was placed on reusing and upcycling materials wherever possible. The children have been involved throughout with planning, planting and harvesting. The first summer was a success with raspberries, blackberries, apples, peas, carrots, courgettes, tomatoes, beans, potatoes, strawberry popping corn and lots more regularly harvested from the garden. Children and their parents walk through on their way home to pick mint and parsley and to see what is growing.
